With so much happening around myself, and Hope gallery. New projects, Gallery shows, the TV show, and what have you. IM taking a moment to re post a letter from one Miki Vialetto. A man who's had a tremendous impact on the tattoo industry. But I'll let the letter speak for itself.

Dear Joe

I feel it is my duty to clarify my position regarding certain recent events which seem to have caused confusion. Those of you who know me are aware that I have worked in this sector for more than 18 years and I have always shown impartiality with regards to what was happening around me in the tattoo industry. I refer to editorial projects, TV shows and all those new ventures which involve the industry that I love, of which I am very much a part and which has become my life and my work.

Recently it was announced a new convention is to take place at the end of April in London which will be called The Great British Tattoo Show. Several readers, professionals and insiders in the industry have asked us if this is in any way connected to our long-established The International London Tattoo Convention. Obviously it goes without saying that the two have nothing to do with each other. The Great British Tattoo Show is organised by Stuart Mears, editor of Skin Deep and other magazines, and organiser of other events in Britain such as Tattoo Jam and Tattoo Freeze.

Many of you, however, are not aware of who is involved with what, so I have decided it’s time to make things clear. Nine years ago, I decided to organise a convention in London, since nothing like this had ever been done in this city before (with the exception of a party organised by Lal Hardy nearly 20 years ago). I wanted London to become the virtual centre of the tattoo world. I fully believed in the project and from that moment on, London became the most anticipated venue in the world of tattooing, featuring the world’s best tattooists who were proud to be participating in such an event, and which created a waiting list of at least 700 tattooists every year. The following year, after the first successful edition of The International London Tattoo Convention, Mr Mears decided to organise a convention the Tattoo Jam, which was to take place one month beforehand. So far, no problem here. He subsequently went on to set up Tattoo Freeze, which was scheduled one week before the Brighton Tattoo Convention. The first Tattoo Freeze website announced the presence of 200 tattoo artists from all around the world, unbeknown to the artists themselves . Mr Mears justified this by saying that they had only been invited and not confirmed. Needless to say none of them showed up. Right now, besides moving the Tattoo Jam 2012 date to two weeks after London, he has launched The Great British Tattoo Show. He tried, it would seem unsuccessfully, to have it held at the Old Truman Brewery (the venue for the first 4 years of the International London Tattoo Convention) and finally confirmed London Olympia.

We are going about our own business in our usual and ethical way.

I have always been supported by and I myself have always supported tattoo artists who believe in this industry for the tattooing itself, and who are not just in it for the money. I decided to write this open letter because I want as many people as possible to be informed about what is going on. I would be grateful if you would share your opinions on facebook, blogs or with as many people as possible, where you feel appropriate. The important thing is to understand the true facts, and what the reality is out there. Having said this, everyone is free to support whoever they feel best relates to their own way of interpreting our tattoo art.

I want to say that my reposting this letter goes out to all of those young, clueless wanna be up and comer (no Offense) tattooists who choose to travel the globe, and jump on board with any tattoo show that invites them. Without having a clue to with whom there working with.
Now don't get me wrong, i've done my fair share of globe trotting. But for lack of a better saying, "those were simpler times". Back than you seemed to know the promoter personally. Hell, most times you received an invitation via phone, direct (Hell I remember getting a call from Paul Booth Directly, Inviting me to take part in his Tattoo the Earth show. Way back when). None of this, Tweet, FaceBook, MySpace, Text, bullshit. I find nothing more insulting than being invited to an event via text. Hell, if it means that much to have an individual at your event. Take the time to get to find their proper email address, or phone #.
But I digress. This, to me seems to be just the tip of a much larger problem that has plagued this trade for the last several years. IM happy that one man has finally taken it upon himself to make his issues somewhat public.
If you know me personally, you probably know that my feelings about the convention scene here in the states is pretty low. Too many shows, too many promoters, and too much BS. And you've probably been witness to my several rants on the subject. If you don't know me personally, you may have taken note of my lack of attendance of shows here in the states (The only show at the moment is DURB's Hell City Show OH). It's mainly because I like to know the individuals I involve myself with. In the past I've had dealings with individuals I was less than thrilled with. I no longer deal with these people. I've always said, "You should know the person you jump into bed with. And if you don't. Wear a fucking Condom!" I know its crude, but...
I hope I've not overstepped myself with Miki by reposting this letter. I've nothing but respect for the man, and his accomplishments.
Sorry for the rant. I could go all day on this, but i'll end it here.

It's official! it coming

Well, its finally been released and I can talk a bit more freely about it. Back in August and September I went out to Hollywood CA to film a TV show for 6 weeks. The show is titled "Best INK" And will Debut on the Oxygen Network, Monday January 30th.
Honestly I can't speak too much on the particulars of the show. But I can say that it is a competition based show, in which I am the head judge. While some of the artists are both young, and reletively unknown. They all have Talent, and a bit of something to prove. I'd like to think that this show will be both entertaining, and Educational to the Tattoo client, and artist alike. Letting people know what to look for in both a good, and bad tattoo.
Also check out this months issue of Tattoo Magazine for a cover feature on the show.

There will be plenty more coming on this, as the date gets closer, so keep an eye peeled.

Deck, the Freakin Hall's!

I just got around to completing a new skate deck for Jime Litwalks "Deck The Halls". Theres a portion of the decks profits going to charity. So if ya find yerself in Vegas, and dig art on skate decks, check it out.

Now while I usually dig the long format of a skate deck. I will admit to being a bit stymied for this one. Rather than doing a jovial holiday piece. I went with a less than festive theme for this one. I started with a quick sketch of a skull. Planning on kind of working with some weird colors, and blending it into the background. I wasn't overtly concerned with it fitting proper.

I than had to run out, and pick up a new electric sander. As I seem to have misplaced my old one (never know when yer gonna need the damn thing). And for this deck I tried something a bit different. When out at the art supply store, I'd seen Spray Gesso. Yup Gesso in a can. Now if you've seen this before, good for you. But for me this was new. And always interested in trying something dumb, and new. I picked up a can. It sat around for a bit. But being how I was on a bit of a time constrain, what better time than to try it out on this here deck. I'M happy to report, it worked out great.
It left a really nice tooth to paint on. But I was a bit disappointed in the fact that it was a bit to soft to really do a ton of initial pencil work with. But no big deal. I was on a time constraint, and just pulled out the ole airbrush, and started to crank away.

Like Most of my work I was frustrated, and not incredibly happy at first. But after letting it sit for a day (completed), I went back, and was very satisfied with the end result.
I'm also sending Jime A deck I did many years ago for the "Abrasions" Skate deck book, from Presto Publishing. The book is out of print to my knowledge. So this could be the last time to see this art.
Regardless, if yer in Vegas. You should check out the show. Jime tells me that there are quite a few talented artists taking part in the show. And he's already received quite a few killer decks.

I know it aint the tools, but the Artist, But...

Yeah, yeah, I know. It ain't what yer using, but how your using em. But Hell over he last several years i've made some big changes in my tattooing. And I must say that I find a bit of a difference. All of which IM quite happy with.
Firstly let me say that a little over 4 years ago, Jime Litwalk brought back these pigments from Brazil, and I was hooked. Less than a year later were both out in Brazil hanging with one Paulo Fernando of Electric Ink And Easy Glow was Born! Made in Brazil, and brough to the states, by Jime, and I, This stuff is By far, hands down the best damn stuff I've ever used!
But Hell enough shameless Promotion, and bragging. Heres a tattoo I started on a feller a little over 2 years ago. He came in yesterday, and I was finally able to snap some pictures of it. I know its not my normal fair, but...

Like I said, I realize its not equipment, but the artist that makes the difference. But Tell ya what... Good gear can really make all the difference.

Been a week

Wow, Been a little over a week, and too my knowledge, I've not had any artwork ripped off. Or tattoos redone on someone else's client!
Haha, well here's some more fodder for the hacks.
I started this piece quite a few months ago, and he came by to get his other side started. So I figured I'd take a healed photo of her. Healed up beautifully. Really dig er. Man, I love my "Easy Glow"

And heres what we started on the opposite rib. He was looking for another gal, with a bit of a devil gal theme, Holding a human heart.

Now this last piece was a bit of a cluster fuck on my part as it should have been done in a single day/session. But because IM an ass, I actually did it oer the course of two days, in 2-3 hour session. Yeah IM sorry Becky.

And I aint happy about it!
Over the last several years, I've published several books of my art, and tattoo work. Also over the many, many years of my tattoo career, i've had my work published in countless magazines, and art/tattoo publications. Now does all this advertisement, and self publication mean that everything I've done is up for grabs? That all the work that I've allowed to be published, wether it be in books, magazines, and on the web, is free far all those free loading, non thinking, unoriginal, Lazy, dumb ass artists, to just take, and do with what they want? I think not!
Now, for all of those individual tattooers (and the majority of this rant is directed at you all) out there who don't seem to know the rules (and there seems to be a shit ton of you out there), here they are. You "DO NOT, TAKE ANOTHER TATTOOISTS ORIGINAL TATTOOS. AND REPRODUCE THE WORK ON YOUR CLIENTS! This means, if a client of yours comes to you with a piece out of a magazine, or a print off of the internet, and says, "I really dig this, can you do it?" Your response should be "NO"!
This is a rule that I was taught, and have followed in my Near 19 years of tattooing! Its also a rule that as an artist, I find just makes sense! I wish to be the best at what I do! And that means working my ass off, every day, and for every tattoo, or painting that I do. Which means drawing, and creating my own style.
I do realize how difficult being an artist is. And I do realize that a lot of the tattooists out there, are young, and very influenced by the work they see on a daily basis. Hell, Even IM insanely interested in all of the work being tattooed today. IM blown away by the talent of some of these your guns coming out of the woodwork, of todays tattoo trade! But I've always strived to never let it sway what it is that I want to do. What it is that IM trying to create! And I would never cheapen another artists clients by ripping off an original idea. An original piece of artwork created just for them. Just so that I can say that I was able to do what another tattooist already did! Its ignorant, and lazy!
Being a great tattooist is not about doing what the status quo is able to pull off. Its about doing a great tattoo, and making your own freakin mark in this trade! But please also consider the lowly "Flash, Street shop" Artist. Hell this is a trade that seems to all but been forgotten. When I first started tattooing, all the other guys in the shop loved reproducing the art on the walls. There was a ton of it out there, and oh so many great artists that created it. And all of the flash was made to reproduce as much as you wanted. To me the biggest shame of todays young tattoo culture, is that the flash artist seems to be all but forgotten. No one wants to create flash, and God forbid there asked to do it on a client.
Trust me when I say this. That many of todays "younger" tattooists would greatly benefit form working in a street shop. And would, and SHOULD put there pencils down, and use tattoo flash for what it was meant for. To reproduce on your clients. Spend more time drawing in your sketch books, and less time trying to talk your clients into getting what you want to do, and what you've drawn. It aint always the best for you, or your clients.
I know that this sounds like a swift kick in the balls to all these young tattooists out there trying to make there marks. But trust me it is not my intention. IM just trying to make the point that getting to the top, and getting the recognition you want, is a journey. And you will only hurt your career by taking the low road.
There really is so much more that I want to say. And im certain that as the days go by, this is a subject that I will touch on more, and more. But for now, I think i've said quite enough.
Feel free to add your own thoughts, and by all means feel free to contact me with your thoughts. Just be prepared for the truth from me. IM not one who's found myself where I am today, by sugar coating and blowing smoke!

Well, its the day after our Hope Gallery Halloween Party, and I wasn't nearly as hung over as you'd have thought. As a matter of fact I was up at 8 am (my normal waking time) this morning. Drinking coffee, and preparing for work. But there was no Tattooing today. So I spent my day today at Hope, Tattooing.
Had a really good time to boot. I managed to finish this piece. IM still unsure as to the title. IM going with "3, in the Same" for the moment.

I initially did the sketch for this piece for 2011 NIX "Death" art show. But wasn't feeling up to doing it back than. So I finally got around to doing her last week. Took about 3-4 sessions. IM not sure about the time.
She's about 9x17" (again, not certain of the size either). All Acrylics, on gessoed, illustration board.

New Stuff, winter weather

Well, its been a while. And while its not like i've not been busy, or productive. I've just found myself with little time to update here. Which is a bummer, as theres quite a lot of cool stuff on the horizon.
But i'll post here with a handful of new pieces, as well as an older, healed piece.
Heres a Virgin mother I'd done a few weeks ago on the side of a fellers neck. Have I told you how much a I Hate tattooing necks?!?!

I also got to do a Zombie Hooker (his words) on a hand. Dug ths a lot as its the proper season, only days away from Halloween. & I've not tattooed a hand in a couple of months. So this was a well timed tattoo.

And Finally a healed picture of Ralph's "Angela" Rib panel. Did this about 4 years ago. Healed really well. She's gonna be accompanied by a Spawn rib panel, opposite her. Started, but far from completed.

And now you'll have to excuse me as I prepare for work, a Halloween Costume party. And what there saying will be an unheard of Winter storm, bringing 2-6 inches of snow this evening. Should bode well for our party, huh?...

Its Fall!

Man, I love this time of year! The Cool weather, and the fact that Halloween is right round the corner. Plus we finally get to turn the AC's off at the shop, and my Electric, and Gas bill is a little more manageable at the shop!
I've several project on several burners, so keep an eye peeled for those. And for all those in the area, or willing to make the trip. Hope will be hosting our second Halloween costume party.

Well Were getting ready to head to Chi Town tomorrow (Friday the 7th) for the Chicago debut of "Quick & Painful"!

At the RotoFugi Gallery . Helping out at this event will be Patrick Cornolo, and his SpeakEasy crew. Which is a good thing, cause Q&P CT damn near killed me. And IM the only Hope guy attending the Chicago show. And if anything like the Hope show. I'll need all the help I can get!
Patrick has also allowed me to host my Seminar, "Lining, Cheatin, Stealin" At SpeakEasy. Sunday the 9th. At 5pm. Check out the Hope Shop for sign up info.

Should be a great time, and IM really looking forward to it. Well most of it at least. I think the Q&P will be just that. Just "Long, and Painful". See ya there.

So, It was my birth day

Wow, that month just flew the Fuck by!
This past month has been a whirlwind of activity. Between arriving back from Hollywood on round the 10th, and hitting the ground running.
I did a seminar at Paradise Gathering, We had Greg Simkins, and Adrien Dominick paint the back wall at Hope. Played host to Adrien on his week long stint guest spot at the shop. Hope hosted the Baroness's "Quick & Painful" Pop art flash show (I still hurt all over because of that one).
And lets not forget tattooing daily (trying to catch up to the damage I did to my schedule having gone to Hollywood for so long)! all IM trying to say it was crazy.
But I still managed to take the time to turn 43!

The fellers, and Nichole treated me to a B-Day dinner at what is quickly becoming a favorite eatery, drinking place for me. Zafra We had a killer meal, accompanied by some fantastic rum (All recommended by the owner Dominick). He even brought me out my very own B-Day specialty Rum, complete with a candle. Hell who needs cake, when theirs plenty of great rum to be had!
On a more professional level, heres a couple of things I've been working on. The first is a tattoo that I just completed on a feller from LI, NY's ribs, He was looking for an angel similar to an angel on a pretty popular T-shirt. Wasnt diggin that, so we came up with this.

Next is a painting started on the night we did a painting evening with Adrien, and all the rest of the guys at Hope. Lotta fun. IM calling her "Heart Charmer"

Same as usual, Acrylic, on Gessoed (this time) bristol board. Still need a scan of her.
Thats all fer now. Getting ready for the "Quick & Painful" in Chicago. Along with a Seminar at Chicago's SpeakEasy Tattoo.

Octo heaven

Its been a couple of days of OCtopus tattooing. I say this because, thats pretty much what it was. The day that Greg, and Adrian were out back painting the wall at Hope. I was tattooing a very nice young Lady from Canada.
Shantelle came if for the Paradise tattoo Gathering, and ran into me there Friday evening, after my Seminar. I started a rather large thigh piece on her last June, and explained that I had a few hours free if she were interested in driving the 2,1/2 hours back down to Hope. She figured it beat the Hell outta a 8 Hour drive from Canada, so...

Funny how some things just work out.
p.s. Why IM titling this blog "Octo Heaven is because the following day I finished tattooing a fellers chest panel with my Octo Head piece. Actually its only loosely based on the painting. But i didn't photograph it just yet. Waiting on healed shots in a few weeks. So keep an eye peeled.

Sunday, was a good day

Well, we returned from the Paradise late Saturday evening (Sunday morning) to a chilly home. But with a very special guest in tow. Greg Simkins came back to CT from the show, after his work shop at Paradise. He agreed to do a bit of painting on Hope Galleries back yard wall. All I can say is that I was pretty blown away.

Than to add even more excitement to our day. Adrian Domenic from AZ/CA showed up for his week long guest spot, and jumped right in!

All in all it was one Hell of a day for all of us at Hope. Thanks so much fellers.

Lining, Cheatin, Stealin. This Friday At Paradise

Hey All so IM gonna do our Lining, Cheatin, Stealin. Seminar Solo this Friday At the Paradise Tattoo Gathering.

As with when I do this seminar with Jime, I'll be touching on my drawing techniques, and how I cheat, and have tried to create a somewhat original, and recognizable drawing, and tattooing style.

I'll also be touching on Tattooing techniques, and what I see to be the differences between Rotary, and Coil machines. Seminar will run between 2-3 hours, cost $150. and one can get tickets at door. Look for me in the Main room at Paradise, Friday afternoon. Course includes booklets, a DVD, and a lot of knowledge. So bring your thinking caps, sketch books, and portfolios. Questions, and audience interaction is a must. So be prepared.

IM back Baby

Well, hello there! Yup IM back at Hope, and have already put in my first full day. But firstly, I'd like to say thanks for all your patience. And when I say your. I mean all the clients who were forced to wait several months for appointments that we were forced to reschedule due to my Hollywood excursion.
Well, I'll start by posting a lil piece I did on one Latisha Wood.
A super talented artist, and cool gal.

She was looking for an LA gal, and what she got was a Capo Gal, as an LA gal. Sorry Latisha.
But now that IM back my very first tattoo was finishing off this Statue of Liberty piece I stated just before leaving for the west coast. And also one of the first clients that had to be double rescheduled.

the Fact that we finished this on 9/11 is a total coincidence. Sorry for the delay man. Thanks for being so Patient.
And lastly, while out in CA. I stopped by and visited mr Franco Vescovi, of Bishop Rotary. Got me a whole bunch for sale. So if yer interested, drop me a line.

Friends Like these, huh...

Well, IM still out here in LA,La land, And LOVING IT, NOT! Im bored, IM tired, and I wanna go back to tattooing on a daily Basis. But I digress...
Firstly like some may know, I was supposed to be in Austria, and Germany Last, and this week. Of course this trip trumped that one, so here I sit, it my North Hollywood hotel room, bored outta my skull, waiting on yet another late start to a day of what I hope will be low drama, and just good ole fashioned tattooing, and shit talkin (Wishful thinking).

The Above photo was sent to me by friends (I use the term Loosely) while attending the Austrian show, that I sadly missed. the following sketch was doodled by friend Jime Litwalk, in retaliation to my trip out west. Nice guy huh...

Now while I am a bit upset about spending time with friends abroad, I have whole heartedly embraced this part. And I've been trying to deal with my day to day life out here as best I can. I've been drawing, and trying to line up work (difficult as my time on set seems to change from time to time, and lining a shop, and client up last minute, is not all that easy). But I've been spending a bit of time drawing, when I can, heres a few.

I wanna thank Shawn Warcot, Johnny Arias For giving me a place to work, and crash while down in Riverside. A lot of fun working down there, and good folks out there at Empire Tattoo.

IM gonna stop writing now before I write something truly hateful, or something that may get my ass in a whole lotta trouble. Just know i am still out here, Missing My Gal, our Dog, The crew at Hope, and especially my Clients back east. Please forgive me. You'll have plenty of time to give me shit should all this filming see the light of day, on the TV.

Hello Hollywood

Well, what can I say so far? Not a whole lot, according to my contract. I can say that the days are long, and I've been trying to keep myself busy, while not on set.

Its been unfortunate that i've really not been able to tattoo nearly as much as I had hoped. IM sort of grounded when I do have a day off set, and its been difficult to get down to Ontario, and SpeakEasy tattoo. But I've managed a couple of days so far.
I suppose its not so bad to actually have a few days off. But It drives me a bit crazy. I wanna tattoo some!
The days on set have been long, and a bit tiring. IM really not sure how the crew, and producers deal with it. Its crazy, but they've been incredibly professional, and cool.
Theres not a ton I can share as far as pictures, and such. But I will say they did a killer job, and IM syked to see what others think when they see it.

Know that IM dealing in my own way, and trying for the best on my end.

IM hoping my next post will be a bit more exciting.

Apologies, and stuff...

Well, Firstly I feel I need to start this particular post with an apology. Seems I was made an offer to come out to CA, and work on a new TV show that is being filmed this month. Now I know how a lot of tattooers are feeling bout TV shows today, but IM really thinking this is gonna be something special. And IM prepared to deal with all the fall out later when it aires (I hope).
But the apology is not for doing the show, but to all my clients at Home that have had to be rescheduled, and moved back a month.
I also need to say sorry to all the folks out in Europe, who had hopes of getting worked on the last 10 days of August. Seems that originally this show was supposed to start shooting Mid July, thru mid August. And like many things it was delayed. So I needed to cancel my time to Germany, and Austria. Terribly sorry to everyone out there, especially my friends that I was really looking forward to seeing.
But I feel most of all the biggest apology needs to be made to both Jime Litwalk, and Obie Hughes. Seems that the trip to Europe was my Idea, and I kinda talked them into it. Well now they'll be on a plane with out there 3rd Rat Pack member. And this really bothers me most.
Sorry guys.

But enough with that. Have I mentioned how freakin beautiful its been out here?!?! Truly. When I left CT it was hotter, and muggier than Hell on a bad day. Here its been wonderful.
IM also getting to do a bunch of tattooing, heres a couple of sketches I worked up for my first days work.

Hey All, well I've been working my Ass off (sort of) at Hope gallery, trying to keep up with tattooing, and painting when my schedule allows. Currently i've completed a few pieces that will be shown at Twenty Two's "Pin Ups, and Pin Stripes" Show Opening August 6th. Wish I could make it.
Which brings me to my next topic. The "Bloody Bite". I've been doing quite a few pieces in Sepia tone, to just try and get my hands in practice. I feel that theres not as much stress (not really), and the results are pleasing (some times).
Im working with Holbein Aero Flash Acrylics, on Raw bristol. And While I started this piece with the New, Badger Krome, I must admit to switching up to my Iwata Custom Micron C.

Now I do realize that while the whole "dark, and sexy" Thing doesn't go along with the Pin-up, and Pin-Stripes theme. I am trying to put together a style/body of work in this theme. So just bare with me, it'll all eventually make sense (hopefully sooner than later).

In other news, while probably more important, I may find myself out on the west coast for the month of August. More on this as I know more, and when IM actually able to talk about it.

Bloody Luv

Well, just finished this lil piece. Now its not much, a little 11x14 sepia piece on Bristol board. Im doing these little mono tone pieces mainly too keep my skills up. As some of ya's may remember, It seems I airbrush so infrequently, that I feel every time I pick up the brush. Its like the first time again.
Well in this case, it sort of was. For this piece I was gifted a prototype Krome Renegade from one Jason Livery of Head Strong Graphics, and Badger air brush. I will admit that it took a bit of getting used to. But after a while, I was able to get the hang of this new brush.

After having used the Renegade Velocity and not being blown away. I mean if your intermediate, or starting, this is an incredible start out brush. But for one that has used an Iwata there entire career (or lack of career), it was not a great replacement. But this new Krome, really seems to have something to it. And its made in the good ole USA.

Keep an eye out for more, with these new brushes. I fully plan on starting a new piece this weekend.

Tattoo School, what an embarrassment

Last night was a bummer. As many may be aware TLC aired there "Tattoo School".
Now, IM not gonna rant here, or freak out. But I will say that IM embarrassed. Embarrassed to be a tattooist today. What a joke. I say this because it was a (so called) tattooist that went out and opened this school. And a tattooist that blatantly Lied about the work going on in this "so called" school. It was a tattooist that took the money from ignorant clients, and a tattooist, that was speaking for the cameras. She calls herself a teacher, and claims to be giving up our secrets. When All she's doing is stealing from misguided people, with no sense to realize that she, and all those she employs, are crooks, and absolute shit.
Whats to be done? My suggestion is that she be ostracized from our community. That suppliers stop dealing with her. Other artists no longer associate with her, or her employees. Convention promotors do not allow her to attend there shows.
Tattooers want to "Take Back" there industry. Well heres something within all our reach. Care about the people you associate with. And be accountable for your actions.
IM not one to say that TV is evil, and that a network should be Boycotted for its programming. Hell I've watched Ice Road Truckers, and Deadliest Catch, for crying out loud! I think it is a powerful media, and we should take advantage of it, when we can (like this school just did). But be sensible, and act with caution! Too much can be at stake.
Last Night did nothing but embarrass us, and in all honesty her, and her school.
There is simply too much that I want to say, so I will stop here, and not bore you with the rest.

Little "She Wolf" action

Well, got er done finally. "She Wolf" started as an 11x14 sketch/drawing for some Sullen shirt ideas I was working on. I ditched the sketch, and idea, to work on others. But kept the sketch on my wall in my work space.
Eventually, after having done a few mono chromatic pieces I decided to re-work the drawing as a Biker/Tank Girl looking thing. You can almost make out the original sketch underneath.

After making the changes I light tabled the sketch on Bristol board. I really like the bristol, as it makes transferring the sketch to board super easy with the light table.
I had 1 session of a few hours on Sunday to hammer a fair chunk of the piece out, to start.

Theres no Friskit (I learned my lesson after the last piece), the hard outline/silhouette was achieved by making a paper stencil, and tacking it down with a bit of tape. The Bristol is untreated (no gesso), so pulling up the surface is a pretty big concern.

All the paint is a Holbien, Sepia tone. A touch of black was added to darken some of my tones. I tried to do as little white as possible. Relying instead, on the white of the surface. But I still needed to go in, and pull some highlights with an eraser, and brush.

Well I finally finished this little piece, just in time (literally) for the end of the Auction for James McNish's Mom.
Had a bit of fun, and a lot of frustration with this piece. Firstly, I worked on Bristol board. A medium I usually reserve for colored pencils, and markers. But I figured, Hell I've plenty of the stuff kicking around, why not use some. Secondly, I used frisket. Another tool i've strayed away from for many, many years. For many, many reasons. The first because of its flat, oh so sharp edges. Hate sharp edges, like things to look a bit blurry. Second, its sticky. So very sticky, and with bristol, tends to pull up the surface. Not fun.
Both things I should have been aware of before I started this piece. But thats all behind my dumb ass now. Here ya go.

Stared sketch, done with Col-Erase pencils, on tracing paper.

Laid it all out on bristol board, and worked my values in with pencil. Kept the pencil a bit loose, hoping for some of the texture to show thru the end result. Didn't happen this way. I painted way too heavy, and opaque.

Blowing in some color after having brushed in some color in background, hair, and skin tones (traditional brush).

Most of the Airbrush work is done at this point, leaving me to work out the details with Colored pencils, and paint brush. On a side note. I recently picked up the Drew Struzan DVD, and it probably did more harm than good to me. I've since done a couple of pieces (this being the second), where I screwed around with a bit of his technique. While its an amazing style. I just didn't put enough time in, and cheated my way thru most of it. All showing thru the final piece.

You can see a bit of pencil, and brush work here in the close up. All PrismaColor Pencils, and Golden, Badger, and Holbien Liquid (airbrush) acrylics.

Heres the final piece, she measures 8x13". Sort of a poor scan. Made the mistake of crystal clearing her before a scan. Another dumb ass mistake.
Hope the young gal who won the auction digs her in person.

Couple of new (old) Tattoos.

Well its been quite a while since I updated this thing. Its not that I haven't had a ton to post, Between Events at home, the shop, on the road. As well as new art, and tattoos. Its just that i've not had a bunch of time to sit, and type it all down.
So here I have a tattoo started in Calgary a couple of weeks ago. Its on Mr. Steve Peace. Feller who runs the Alberta Bound Tattoo convention in Calgary
He got tattooed at the NIX show in Calgary this past June, and while we were supposed to finish the whole tattoo. I was only feeling fresh enough to do 1/2.

While IM certain he wanted to finish the entire tattoo (and he certainly was sitting well enough to do so), I felt that certain areas of the body, and larger tattoos are best when done in stages. Less trauma to the body, and usually a better healing experience. So while IM certain Steve would of preferred a finished tattoo, IM happier this way.
Next up, our friend Sket, who recently moved out west to LA. was in town for a quick minute. I was able to get some snap shots of the arm I did back in the Fall.

A lil, sketching action

Here's a short video shot last month that we used for the "lining Cheatin, Stealin" seminar Jime, and I did in Toronto.

Had a ton of fun with the Seminar, and I think that folks really got a lot out of it, and enjoyed themselves in the process. I will be hosting a similar seminar in September at the Paradise Gathering in Jimminy Peak MA. September 16th, 5pm.

Yup, IM back. Jime and I just returned from this years Northern Ink Xposure And we had a killer time. We hosted our Seminar Lining, Cheatin, Stealin" (for only the second time), to a great audience, who really seemed to dig it, a lot. We got to hang out with a bunch of great folks, and do some fun tattoos. We also did a brief spot at Niagara's H&H. CHeck out Jime's Blog for a cool little clip (thanks Pete).
I also brought down a handful of my Signature series Bishop Rotaries. And they were scooped up immediately. I'll be busting Franco's Balls for more, so I can finally get em on line. So keep an eye peeled.
Jime and I were also a couple of the first artists to test drive the New Neo-Tat machines. A smaller frame style from the original. Killer. If yer a fan of the original Neo, you'll love this new version. Smaller, and lighter. Should be released by August. Hell, Jime, and I tired stealing ours. But Ray was to wise to us, and managed to pry em from our fingers before the end of the show.
I will admit to this trip being a bit stressful, having to deal with customs and all. But Hell, totally worth it.
Upon our return to Hope I was pleasantly surprised to find this waiting for me.
Yours truly, and so many other insanely talented artists make up the content of this incredible book. Honestly I've not had enough time to sit down and give this book the time necessary to make a proper assessment. But just a quick sit down with it has shown me I'll be soooo Far from disappointed. Well I was able to spend a couple of early mornings at Hope to finish up my skate deck for the Twenty Two Art show Saturday June 4th.

I took a couple of shots of er, after I cleared the Hell out of it, and of course, none of the pictures have come out without a huge glare. My fault for being over anxious, and clearing it to finish her off, before the photos.

All in all, a ton of fun, and wish I could be there to check out the other decks. IM certain that Rodney, and Lise put together a killer show.
Now to start my piece for the NIX show next month.

Well been real slack with keeping up on my blog. But to be honest, I've been pretty busy with tattooing, and keeping up with things at the shop. With little or no time for art away from tattooing, and certainly even little less for blogging.
But Alas, here I am, blogging away. A week ago, a friend from Australia requested a couple of commissions in trade. So I finally made a couple of "Non Tattooed" drawing. Meaning, I'll not be tattooing these. They were drawn for him, so please don't "Bite".
First we have a little Space Gal Action, called "InkJecta Gal" 11x14 pencils, markers, on paper.

Second I have here A lil Gal, IM calling "Too Stink'in Cute". 8x10 Pencils, Markers, on paper.

"Git Er Done"

Yup, Done, and DONE! IM finally finished with this latest commission done for a young lady in the UK, and her upcoming tattoo convention (look for the promo posters soon). She's acrylic on water color paper, bout 24"x30". And IM not embarrassed to say, that it took much longer than I had anticipated.

I'd also did a bit of experimenting with this mono chromatic piece. The last 2 I had done, i'd used a sepia tone, that I'd mixed myself. And just built that up, till I was happy with it. For this one, I'd dropped a burnt sienna, than darkened that up. The effect was entirely too red. Causing me to layer quite a bit. Therefor also causing me to go back in, and drop in highlights (I usually prefer to use the lightest point of my paper). Which in turned gave me unnatural hot spots. Very frustrating, in all. I will most certainly not be working this way again in the future, as IM hoping to do more like these.

Yesterday was a fun day. Had a guy, and gal in for a bit of Sunday afternoon tattoo action. The Young lady wanted me to do an owl. Yes, even I am exempt from avoiding the Owl, Tat Craze. But regardless, as different as this sort of piece is for me. I had a blast. Wouldn't mind doing a bit more of em, to be honest.
Here are a couple of sketches I worked up the evening before.

Yes, a new pair of shoes...

I say that with a bit of loathing mainly because up until my very brief stint on Miami Ink, I really enjoyed painting Vans. The reason I say this, is because when I was asked to do Miami Ink, it was mainly for tattooing. But the Producers desperate to find something cool to do with me, away from Tattooing, asked if id be interested in painting a pair of Vans (oh I mean Sneakers, Can't say Vans, as they did not pay to use the products name) on camera. I did, and it was fun. But when the episode aired, all I got was. "Man I really loved those shoes you painted for Darin". Or "Your that guy, that painted those cool shoes".
Now I don't wish to belittle anyones opinion of my painting skills. But the last thing I wanted to be remembered for, was a pair of Vans I spent 2 hours painting on a TV show about, tattooing. That being said. I eventually did a few more pair after the show. And they were very well received. But after countless emails, and a lot of pissed off folks. I stopped painting any more apparel. Fact is IM a tattooer, and that is how I make my living. I really don't see myself being able to pay the bills painting shoes. Not to mention the fact that I got my start as a paying artist, in a Mall on LI, as an airbrush artist. Painting all sorts of stuff for folks. And to me, its way to much like taking a step backward in my career. So I do try to avoid it.
Why this long ass, tiring, and a bit pretentious tirade? Well my Good friend Obie Hughes is hosting an "Off the Wall" Painted Vans art show Tomorrow Sunday May 1st, at his shop "SpeakEast Tattoo" in Ontario CA. Heres my Little contribution.

Lil, Horror Tatt action

Well, Ralph was in a day ago, and we finally finished the back of his thigh/knee. He's way into the horror movie scene, and Julio did some crazy stuff on his calf. I got the upper leg (thigh). The top has a portrait of Jason, Michael Myers, and Chainsaw Massacre. Not really my thing, but I can pull one outta my ass from time to time.
For the back of his thigh, he wanted to go with a Horror ride theme (ala House of a 1000 corpses), with zombies, and shit. So heres my take on that.

Ton of fun. Next we make our way back up to his ribs to continue his torso, and Spawn piece.

But it would be nice to have the shots so that folks may start to consider me for there black and grey work. Not that IM bitchin' about only doing color. IM so Back Baby!

Well after 12 days on the road in Both Copenhagen, and Germany. I've finally arrived home, to a full work schedule with no time for relaxation (hence the late Blog post here).
Both shows were fantastic, really had a blast, and met some great new folks. As with most shows, and travels over the last several years Jime Litwalk and I went together, for both shows, and guest spot. A better traveling companion one could not ask for. When he remembers his pass port. But I'll leave that for him to explain. Suffice to say, we had a great time.
Got to do some fun tattoos. Wasn't breaking any bounds here, just having fun, and keeping the people happy.
Also got to do a little video with Dirk Behlau of Pixeleye and a new book project he's working on with tattoo portraits. Looking good so far. Pretty excited bout seeing the actual book hit the stands.

But now IM home, and apart from being a bit exhausted, some home drama, and an intense work load. I am looking forward to spending a bit of time in my paint studio, catching up on art, and other projects I've got kicking round in my head. So keep an eye peeled.

Germany, and the Ink Explosion!

Well IM in Germany now, did my first tattoo here at Andy's Body Electric, and had a blast doing it. He was looking for a 80's rocker style Gal. Lotta fun.

Copenhagen. Fantastic

Wow, The Copenhagen Tattoo Ink Fest, was a blast. We all had a fantastic time. Hung out with some old friends, and met a bunch of new ones. First tattoo outta the gate was a fun skull tattoo, on a great gal.
Followed by some other fun pieces, on cool folks.

Than came the after party. Tell ya what some gorgeous gals were killing it on the dance floor, and we were all having one Hell of a time.

So all in all, even though our European trip started off rocky, with Jime missing his flight with me to Copenhagen. It all turned out to be fantastic. Now a short day of relaxing, seeing some sights, and than off to Germany, and a guest spot at Andy's Tattoo Body Electric.

A bit of snow, and travel

Well IM packed, and ready to travel to Europe. But first IM gonna take a moment to post a picture that was tattooed last week (finished tattooed, 2nd session). Its on a young Lady from the Cape, and she requested a snow flake gal. Heres the sketches I came up with for the piece.
I kinda went with a bit of a traditional lay out for the sketch that we eventually went with. But had a blast with the second sketch as well. She'll probably make it into a new project that Jime Litwalk, and I are in the process of working on.

The Final version was tattooed on the side of her calf, and she eventually plans on sleeving her lower leg. She's thinking a Fall Theme for the next one, but she's still up in the air.
Now IM off to Europe to check out the Ink Fest in Copenhagen. Than Jime Litwalk and I will be headed to Germany to Visit Friend Andy Schmidt And His Tattoo Ink Explosion Looking forward to seeing all my good friends, and make some new ones. Plus check out some of the incredible artists out there.

Robs Arm

Well I tattooed mr. Rob again last week, to fill the rest of his arm. He's one of those clients that has been coming in for a few years, and getting tattooed from Eric, Julio, and I. Super nice guy, and a great client all around.
Well unfortunately he's also one of those clients that I cant seem to get a good photo of until after he's all healed up. Not a bad thing, as its better to have healed photos than fresh.
Well heres a couple of shots that I did on him, healed bout 6 months or more.

We've one more session to finish left to finish the sleeve. Pretty syked to finish er up. Than he'll be able to move on to his next project with Eric.

Fun Sunday

Well I finally went and did it! Got to spend a Sunday at Hope doing something besides tattooing. Yup went into the shop this morning after dropping my gal off at the train station, and painted. So excited to finally have a bit of free time to do so.
I got to start and finish a little piece for the Tara Mcpherson "Tiny Trifecta Show" Marking the Grand Opening of her store "The Cotton Candy Machine" April 9th There are a bunch of Killer artists and like the INLE show, IM honored to be a Small (literally) part of this show.
Heres the sketches I started working up for it while I was out in California last week
Its a pretty small piece measuring about 5"x7" And is painted with Acrylics on Gessoed watercolor paper. Here's a couple of in progress picts.
I Think IM sticking with the Title "Candy Heart", But that may change. Its difficult to see here, but the Heart at the bottom is painted with a Magenta Candy. So it has a nice sparkle to it.
Wish I was gonna be around for the opening evening. But IM off to Copenhagen next week. And will be in Germany the weekend of the show. Guess I'll have to catch it when I get home.

Well today I was surprised by the arrival of 2 new Rotary Tattoo Machines that I ordered a week ago. And I must say I was pretty damn impressed. The Bishop Machines from Franco Vescovi is a well designed, and smooth running piece of equipment.
IM also looking forward to some future plans with Franco, and his Bishop. So stay tuned.
Also today, Rob, one of my good clients stopped by the shop to show me how his Pirate gal healed up. I was pretty syked to be able to get some healed shots of her.

On a technical note. She was Lined and Shaded with my Neo-Tat machines. And all Easy Glow Tattoo pigments. She's been healed bout 5 weeks here.

A few days to Relax

Wow, been a hectic few weeks, with a bunch of folks visiting us from out of town, and some traveling of my own.
That along with an already hectic tattooing schedule, has left little time for any real painting. But IM hoping to put a few hours in the end of this weekend.
But heres a couple of fun pieces I did over the last couple of days.
First is on Good friend Rodney Raines. He paid Alethea and I a surprise visit this past week, and asked if I'd tattoo his hand, as a birth day gift, to himself. It was both an honor, and absolute horror. As I've nothing but the utmost respect, and admiration for Rodney as an Artist, and person. I've been a fan of this feller since I first met him some 13 years ago, when I sleeved him. I've watched him grow as an artist, and person. Im truly honored to call him a good friend, and to have tattooed him again this past week.
But enough Sappy shit. Heres what we did.

Unfortunately, our time with Rodney was sort of a hit, and run. And due to the short notice, I was unable to do to much re-scheduling. So unfortunately I had to work on the day he left. But Did have a fun time with this little piece. Filling in a spot left on a sleeve that Eric's worked on over the past year or so.
I've about a week or so before We expect more guests, and than IM off to Europe for 10 days. In that Time IM to do a bit of painting for an upcoming show in Brooklyn. But more on that later.

There, and Back....

Well, IM back from my quick little jaunt to California. As some may know, I went out to LA to attend the INLE show at Gallery 1988 and I must say it was a blast. From the art hanging on the walls, to all the great folks in attendance. This show was one of the best I've ever been to.

There are even more photo's of the event at Greg's Blog. Such a great time, full of great folks, and Amazing inspiring art.
But that was far from the end of my experience out west. As a matter of fact IM proud to say that this was my first trip there, where I left my gear at home, and just visited a few folks.
My main stop was visiting Obie Hughes, his Gal Amy, and his SpeakEasy tattoo in Ontario CA. There I hung out while Obie, and Worm worked there ass's off, and I just cracked one em. Quite fun, if you were me. Nothing like a bit of Ball busting to set the proper mood of the trip.

But IM not done. My trip was ended by a trip back into LA, and a meal at Rosco's Chicken, & Waffles. If you've never had, and find the idea of chicken, and waffles strange. Trust me, its not, and its delicious. A must dining experience.

All in all, the trip was a success, and a blast. And as usual, tiring. I can say that that IM more than happy to be home, and not looking forward to heading out again. But as usual thats right around the corner.

Well all, IM leaving for CA on Friday Morning to attend the opening evening of the INLE show, at Gallery 1988.

Very excited for this show as there is a killer line up, and I must admit to being a little blown away, and inspired to being asked to take part. My Contribution is the "Madonna Falsa"
I can only hope, she holds a candle next to all the other killer art that will be hanging.

No Pictures, just pissed!

Wow, I've just been informed by quite a few folks out there in Internet land (thank you all for looking out), that there's a shit shop down in FL, that goes by the name Pirates Cove tattoo. That they were using my artwork on there website, as well as having a bio of me on there.
Normally I may not be so upset (if I was asked, or perhaps there was some contact info to me), but upon calling the shop, I spoke with some rude prick, who was imediatelly pissy on the phone, and said that they would remove said art.
Well to there credit they did just that, but proceeded to replace the link with the name "Joe Schmo". Honestly I'd usually not be too pissed, thats cool wanna be dicks, knock yerself out. But guess what. You still have my art on your site (in there "Custom" section), and I want it removed. Said artwork is a Pirate Gal Painted for one Rodney Raines in NC.
So IM asking anyone out there who knows me, and feels like defending me, and all those other artists out there, getting ripped off by hacks on a daily basis to drop these folks a line, and give em a piece of yer minds.

"The Point" When asked about the pictures, and bio on the site (Via a phone call), there artist (or whoever) acted offended, and nasty. Had he just been polite, and reasonable, explained why they did it. Trust me, I would never have flown off the handle.

Heres a lil somethin, somethin, I did weeks ago as a bit of fun, and experiment.

Its based (or straight up taken) from a clients sketch that I'd done for his tattoo. Turns out I've been real happy with everything i've drawn for him, and real happy bout the tattoos in general. So i decided to work work up a little practice painting. I say practice painting, mainly because thats what it is. Its just a little Transparent shading grey (Golden Liquid Acrylic), mixed with a bit of (Holbien) Burnt Siena. And just free handed with my Iwata Custom Micron. Its like 11x14" on bristol board. Like I said nothin fancy, just a little something to keep the hands in working order.

Well it seems like its been quite sometime. But i've finally managed to sit down, get this piece up online completed.
In my defence, its been a crazy couple of weeks, with more to follow.
Last week I had friends Obie Hughes, and his Gal Amy Mullins in town to celebrate Obie's 40th. We had a blast. The day they left I managed to finish this.

She's titled "Hollywood Babylon" Ater the Misfits tune, and for the Misfits Tribute show At Hope Gallery "We Are 138"
She's 7"x7" and is acrylic on gessoed board.
Still have plenty to do, but again, have friend Jime Litwalk in town, and than IM off to CA for the INLE show next week.

Off and Running

Well after a rather disappointing start to my afternoon, when my client for the day pulled a no show. I was left with the afternoon ahead of me. So I took advantage of the down time, and started my Misfits painting.
Actually I did start this about 3 weeks ago, just before I headed to Brazil. But with everything going on, and work, and oh yeah, nearly screwing the piece up. I figure today was a restart/do over.

All in all, worked out fairly well. Should have gotten further, but no sense pushing it...

Well with the "INLE" show painting finished, and awaiting shipping tomorrow, I find my self with a Sunday before me, and a 1/2 day of tattooing ahead of me. I say half day, mainly because, unlike everyone else at Hope, I work Sundays. Its something i've always done, from when I first started tattooing 18 years ago. Besides IM just about the only one in the shop who doesn't have children to spend there weekends with. So, I work, usually.
But that doesn't mean I let it go to complete waste. I mean I still have Alethea, and Molly to spend time with. This means I usually only book a single appointment, and IM wrapping up tattooing by 3-5pm. Which (depending on how I feel upon completing the tattoo) means I'll usually have a bit of time to paint. Today IM hoping to do a bit of just that. I've stated sketches for some upcoming projects.
First it the Misfits art show were hosting at Hope in June.

Each artist gets to do there rendition of a Misfits song. I've been blessed with "Hollywood Babylon". I'll admit to being a bit stumped about an idea. But than this kinda just leaped outta my head. A bit dirty, yes, but to the point I think...
Theres over 138 pieces of art to be hung, and as a theme, and to make it a bit easier to hang all of the art. We've decided to make all of the art 7"x7". Kind of like a 7 inch art show. Should be a blast. But Like I said, still need to get this one done. Wish me luck

"Madonna Falsa"

Well She's done the "Madonna Falsa" Is complete. Today i finally finished my contribution to the INLE show at Gallery 1988

Really excited bout this show as there is one Hell of a line up. So not only was it an honor to be asked, but a ton of pressure to do a nice piece. I can only hope it compares to the other art for the show.
She's titled The "Madonna Falsa", and yes that is my gal Molly. She's a 12 year old French Bulldog, and she'd love to play with some rabbits.

Actually I've been wanting to do another painting of her, since the first 1 I did of her 8 years ago. Its All Acrylics on Gessoed Board. I picked outta real keen oval, concave glass frame. Looks sweet all done, cant wait to see her on the wall.

Blown, off, and stared painting

Well, today was a freakin bummer. Started out pretty cool. Woke up, made a pot of coffee, and did my sketch for my tattoo appointment. Kind of a fun piece, little zombie gal action.

And what should happen upon getting to work, and setting up? I get stood up. Man, I hate when people do that. I mean Hell, just call me, cancel in advance! Is it really that hard? Nothing bothers me more.
Well, there I sit, nothing to tattoo. So I decide to head into the studio, and hit the easle. As some may know, IM taking part in the INLE show out in CA.

This is a group show being curated by Greg "Craola" Simkins So IM just one of several artists taking part, a real honor.
So today I started my Painting, heres the sketch, and start. Still working on the Title, but looking forward to not screwing this one up. Keep an eye peeled for more.

Brazil, and "The Betty"

Well IM back from Brazil, and I'd love to say it was amazing, and that we took care of business. But IM not sure I can. It was crazy, running from 1 location to another. Doing a tattoo seminar for about 52 individuals, and a ton of talking over business (inks, machines, books). And of course the Heat, lets not forget that. Hell a fat guy in the of south american heat is about as keen as a fat guy sitting on a 10 hour flight in coach (oh yeah, there was that to)!

But honestly, Jime Litwalk and I made the trip to visit some friends, meet new folks, and discuss a bunch of future endeavors. Also to discuss the future of current endeavors. Which we did, sort of. You see nothing really happens fast in Brazil (at least not for us), and we definitely got the full treatment.

But like I said, some things did get taken care of, like our seminar. Jime, and I did a 4 hour work shop on our drawing technique, and tattooing styles. Inks, pencils, paper, the whole thing. And believe it or not, considering 98% of the folks in the room spoke no real english, this went off great. Now its not because Jime, and I are so good at speaking to folks, but because the promotor hired a full on translator. Yup 2 guys sitting behind glass, translating everything we said to all the folks in the room, thru head sets. Very U.N. professional.

Than there was the show. We got to do some way cool tattooing.But that really (i think) was over shadowed by the photo taking. Yup, I felt like a movie star on the red carpet, on opening night, and I can tell ya. I wasn't even a bit comfortable with it. We must of posed for like a 1000 photos with folks down there (and I aint exaggerating). It seems that every time we took a second, we had a guy or a gal, under 1 or both arms, and a camera in our faces. Can't say I was real cool with it, but when in Rome.

Than after the show came the business, and relaxing part of our trip. Yeah IM not sure Jime, or I really get the relaxing part in Brazil. Very nice people in a very rural setting. Little to no Air Conditioning, and not the most comfortable beds. But I aint complaining, like I said, we were made to feel at home, and like 1 of the family. But wow, its a tough family to be part of. And lets not forget the heat. I sure as Hell wont.

But I can go on, and on. And I wont. Needless to say things were accomplished (I hope), and great folks, and new friends were met. And IM certain from the Brazilian stand point, Jime, and I are just 2 americans who just don't get it.

There are many more picts from this trip, and IM only gonna post a couple here. But when I get em all, i'll post em somewhere for your viewing pleasure.

While I was out in the UK this past November, Good friend Lal Hardy of New Wave Tattoo set up an interview with the folks over at Bizarre Magazine

Well I've been going crazy trying to find the issue here in the states, to no avail. But thankfully good friend Lal shipped me a copy last week.

Was very excited bout the article, as this is kind of a different mag to be featured in. And the article looked good. I'll admit I could of done without all of the silly ass Mafia Don references, and I really hated being compared with Tony Soprano. Shit I hated that show.

But all in all, no complaints.

On a side note. Were going thru some web site changes with Hope Gallery, & my personal site And I'll be using this blog, as my only blog. So I'll be posting tattoo news, and personal news along with all of my art updates (as few as those have been to date).

Finally done with this "Not, Vamp Gal"

This piece started out as a Vamp Gal, for a Leslie West collector/commemorative guitar thing. It turned into more of a straight up Pin Up Miss America/Mississippi Gal. All in all a pretty fun, but frustrating as Hell project.
Thinking I was doing myself a favor, I laid the piece out on Mat Board. I've had much success on this medium in the past. But alas, this time, Not.
Started with the background, and had a ton of fun doing the Mountain Scape. Not something IM known for, and as it turns out Fun. Than the Skull. Always a blast rendering a human (or any other kind) Skull. Played around a bit with color, and was really pleased with the results.
Now comes the gal. Should be easy right? Hell this is what I do. I don't know what my problem is, but it seems every freakin time I start one of these things lately, its like the first time i've ever done it. The skin tones started out tough, and just got tougher. Starting out too red, than too dark, than not smooth enough. Hell it was just an uphill battle from the Gal part on.
But finally after several hours, I called it quits. Made a scan, and sent her off. Only too be told that they thought the gal was a bit dark, and if I could change her. Hah, I wish. But I do have a friend who's pretty savvy with Photoshop, and sent her to him. He made some adjustments to her. and here's where my chosen medium bites me in the ass. Seems that when lightening the gal up, all of the Keen texture (that I like so much in an original piece), just became more noticeable. I can only hope that when she prints it looks good.
IM certain that this is far from the last post about this particular piece of art. And IM certain not the last post with my frustration about my art in general.

It seems that every time, I find time to Post here, the first thing I think is finally! I started this blog to put out the art IM doing, outside of tattooing. Well it seems as of late all IM doing is tattooing, leaving very little time to create art off of the skin. Mind you not a bad thing, as I do make a living as a tattooist, and if I had to rely on my art to put food on the table, well lets just say I'd probably not have a weight problem.
But needless to say, I finally managed to put a bit of time in front of the easel, and get this lil baby down. I've always had a thing for the image of a gal and an octopus, perhaps it goes back to the first time I heard the Japanese fable. Regardless this is an idea that I've been kicking around for sometime. And its an image I plan on revisiting soon, as this only scratched the surface.
She'll debut at Hope Galleries "Holiday Hangings" Saturday December 4th.

Trials, and Tribulations.

Well October 22nd, Hope gallery Hosted its "PeepShow, Pin-Ups", to much success. What many did not know was the hassles involved of putting the show together. The worst (for me at least) was a insanely busy schedule (work, and travel, which is still work related), and very nearly ruining (well really ruining) my piece for the show.
Yup she nearly didn't make it. With only 2 days to go, and a full schedule of appointments. I went at my painting with gusto, only to shake an open bottle of black Golden acrylic over it, and proceed to cover said painting with it.
Amazingly I did not freak, or even scream, yell, or break anything. Nope I took it in stride, and worked my ass off the next 2 evenings (after a full day tattooing), to finish her.

What can I say, it was one Hell of a trip. Lots of driving, Lots of walking, lots of standing around, and a shit ton of lines, and oh did I mention the Standing, and walking! But all in all Dragon Con was a blast. We had a killer booth location crammed between Camilla d'Errico http://camilladerrico.com/ And Greg Simkins http://www.imscared.com/ More inspiration there wasn't!
There were all sorts of kooky costumes, and nutty folks all around. And lets not for get all the artists. Again insanely inspiring. Even got to do a collaboration tattoo with friend Greg on Brian. All in all a killer weekend, and entirely too much to write about. Dragon Con, here we come

Eat My Heart Out

Yup, IM done! Very excited. Had the day off from tattooing today, so how did I spend? Like any other nut ball artist with nothing better to do with himself (unfortunately, others would tell you I have better things to do).
But I had good reason to stay in and paint, on my day off. Like I've been posting, IM in this show July 31st out in CA, and this was my last piece for said show.
I must admit that I did a pretty stupid thing. Against my better judgement I tried a new surface to work on. The other fellers in the shop (Eric Merrill, Tim Harris, and Phil Young) all work on this Pastel Board, and they get some amazing results (Mind you they don't suck at painting). I normally paint on gessoed illustration board, but being lazy, and not wanting to cut it, and than prep it. I decided to try my hand with the Pastel board. Wow, what a dumb ass I am. Very different than most of what I've worked on. And I will say that I will probably never use it again.
But IM done, had, some fun, and I hope others like it as well.
This ones a bit more raw than my usual (well not as of late). Its titled "Eat My Heart Out", and its acrylic on Pastel board 11x14.

Hunger Pangs.

Well IM done! In case you didn't know IM pretty happy, bout this, and fairly satisfied with the end results.
Like most of my painting as of late, I do a pretty even mix of Airbrushing, and Traditional paint brush work. I just can;t seem to get away from the use of my airbrushes. But IM trying to incorporate as much paint brush as I can. I really do love the textures, that you just can't seem to achieve with an airbrush.
As usual, all the paint is a mix of Holbien, Golden, and a bit of Badger airbrush acrylics. And all done with my Iwata custom micron c.
Like I said in previous posts, this piece will be one of 3 (by me) hanging at the Black Anchor Collective in CA. Opening July 31st.

Well IM still plugging away on this latest project, in which I've been asked to participate in a group show. Nikko Hurtado is hosting a killer line up, out in CA at Black Anchor Collective.
Here's where IM at for my second (of 3) piece. IM still having issues, but muddling through it. IM not certain what my problem is here. Seems like every time I start a new project, its like the first time I've painted in years. Really need to get over this shit.
I've a day off of work today, and was planning on heading to NY to visit family. But I've chosen to head to the studio and work on her. IM hoping to get it done today. So keep an eye peeled for updates.

Man, I must say that one of my biggest beefs in this industry, is the pure lack of giving a shit about others art!

The other day I was informed about a tattoo shop in NJ that took one of my tattoos and used it for a printed add. It kill me because I post my work online for a handful of reasons. Firstly to advertise myself, and my work. Second, to show off what I've done, and what IM capable of. And lastly to inspire myself & hopefully inspire others.

Now the down side. There's a ton of artists (most Shitty), that don't seem to have a problem ripping off my art, and calling it there own. I mean shit, chances are if your ripping shit off, you suck, and others will most likely be able to tell the difference. And for the poor unfortunates who honestly believe your as good as the pictures you've ripped off. Too bad for them.

Which brings me to this. IM lucky enough to find myself a fairly respected, and even sometimes liked artist. With that, a lot of folks keep an eye out for me, and my art. And thats how this came to my attention.

IM just glad people keep an eye out for your truly. Now all I need to do is figure out a way to get even with these pricks...

Lickity Split

Well I've been feeling a bit down by the fact that I've not blogged in what seems a while. But today, I had no tattooing to do, so chose to paint my rather sizable Little buns off.
Actually i've been meaning to get to these pieces sooner. But I've not been able to bring myself to start em. IM a bit freaked out by the fact that I'll be sharing the walls with some pretty impressive artists, and IM not all together comfortable with it. Honored, but still uncomfortable. The Shaws being called "Girls, Girls Girls", and is hosted by Nikko Hurtado's Black Anchor Collective

That having been said, heres the First piece. Its titles "Lickity Split", measures 4 1/2x6 1/2 and is acrylics on Gessoed wood. First time working on wood for me, and not an entirely unsatisfying experience. Sorry for the insanely Crappy scan. Looks like I'll need to be photographing this one.
The other 2 pieces for this show will be a bit larger (11x14"). and IM hoping will go as smoothly.

Well after a week of no posts, I've finally got one to post. I must admit that IM hesitant to do so, as the image is quite graphic (even for me). But IM pretty happy with the results.
A little background. Well a few months ago, Eric, Merrill, Julio Rodriguez, and I were asked to participate in the Monica Henk Tribute show. Monica was a very talented tattoo artist, who had her future, & life taken away by a hit and run driver. a couple of years later Monica's Brother, and ex-Husband Dan Henk decided to host a tribute show for her. All 3 of us quickly jumped on it. Me more quicker than Eric, and Julio. Seems a lot of the artists did straight up tributes, using Monica in the pieces. Where I did a painting that I felt had a bit of life, and death significants.
Alas after seeing more and more of the images online (prior to the show). I felt mine didn't quite meet the specifications of the event, nor did it have any true feeling for Monica. So I went back to the drawing board a week before the show. And decided on this piece. For those who didn't know this image is very similar to an image I tattooed on her about a year or so before her passing. So at the time I thought what better to paint than that?
Unfortunately It never occurred to me at the time that Monica's whole family would be present at the opening. And there was a pretty good chance they'd find the image a bit disturbing, and inappropriate. SO with only a several hours to go to completion, I scraped the idea.
Problem being, I was pretty happy with the way the piece was turning out. So over the last couple of days I went back to it. And here is the final product (with a little censoring). As it turns out Dan will be putting the entire show together in a book. As it turns out there were quite a few artists that didn't make the deadline. So this piece will also be included in that publication.
IM still working on the title, but have a few in mind. Its all Acrylic (Airbrush, and brush), on gessoed board. And measures approximately 7x14"
I've shown a couple of close ups. I used a lot more paint brush than in the past. IM really digging the effect I can achieve, even though IM not incredibly prolific, or comfortable at the moment. But all in good time I hope.

The Empire, has left the Building

Well not entirely. I'd like to announce the success of out "Disturbance in the Force" show last evening. It was a fantastic time! We had some Storm Troopers, Imperial Guards, and even a Slave Leia. Tope this all off with some amazing art, and cool folks, all equals a fantastic evening.

Yup, all done. Spent the day tattooing, and painting. More time painting than tattooing, but it all worked out in the end. Left the studio before 10pm to boot (didn't expect that).
IM calling here "Let our Droids Service You" Thanks again Eric, for the title). Shes just a bit over 8" high, and done in acrylics (airbrush, and traditional brush), on Gessoed, illustration board.
This was a whole lotta fun, and very rewarding as I now have 2 pieces for the May 4th (Friday) "Disturbance in the Force" show at Hope.

Star Wars, Maiden, and beyond!

So Another day, another dollar. Well Maybe a couple of dollars. Today, I finally got some tattooing under my belt, and while doing that, I was putting the several cotes of Urathane on my "Eddie get a Little Head" skate deck for the Toronto NIX Tattoo Convention, art show. Actually somewhat early on the completion, but IM certain it'll make it just in time. As I'll need to give the Urethane ample time to set, and dry. IM pretty happy with the way it turned out, unfortunately the pics are less than fantastic. But, we all know how that is.
Than after my tattoo I guess I was feeling a bit froggy, and decided to get crackin on the sketch for the second piece I wanted to do for the star wars show. IM not certain what IM thinking here, as the show is literally only days away, and I've appointments every day up to the show. Not fun, but IM gonna giver a try.

Little maiden Action

Well I've been painting just about every day this past week (astounding for the likes of me). Which is good, cause I've taken on way more than I can chew here.
But yesterday found me in Hope's studio till late in the day, working on this skate deck. Its for a tattoo convention/art show in Toronto Canada. The shows called "Highway to Hell", and has a, you guessed it, Rock-n-Roll, Heavy Metal theme. Now IM not much of an AC-DC fan, so I went with my old stand by. Lil Eddie Maiden!
I can't even tell you how many Maiden denim jackets I painted back in the day. And IM happy to announce that it don't get tired. This project, so far has been fun. I was gonna go with my standard girly pin-up stuff. But decided this would be more fun, and a bit more unique for me.

Star Wars frustrations

Well, the past two days has been a trying time for yours truly (artistically). Let me explain. As some of you may know next Friday (June 4th) is hope galleries "Disturbance in the Force" art show. and as usual, I've got too much to do, and waited till the last minute to start my piece.
Well Yesterday, and todays appointments, flaked, and cancelled on me. Not happy, but looked at this as a sign to get my ass to painting. Which I've done. For the past 2 day. 2 solid days of painting (6-7 hours each day). Now I know this may not seem like much to most artists, but for me its a lot in a single stretch (just one of the many reasons I tattoo, and not paint for a living, lack of discipline).
Well today I drew to a close, and I tell ya what. IM not too happy so far. Granted I've a ways to go, but still,,, Well tomorrows a day of tattooing (I hope), and Saturday will have me looking on the piece with fresh eyes. So IM hoping to wrap this B#*CH up by Sunday. Wish me luck

Yup thats right. IM happy, and a bit sad to say that we've sold all our Bride toys out!If you remember last Thursday KidRobot and us released my "Bride" toy, and IM happy to announce (and a bit sad) that we've sold all of ours.
We had our official release on line, Thursday the 20th, and than another release Friday the 21st at this past Hell City tattoo festival. And I couldn't have been happier with the folks response to her.
I wanna thank everyone who came out to support her, and who purchased one of these lil beauts!
By the way, just because IM all sold out of her, doesn't mean ya shouldn't keep an eye peeled for some real special stuff being done with,and to her!

We are almost done packing up for Hell City this weekend! We just needed one last thing which arrived today - The Bride vinyl toy! These sexy ladies will be for sale this Thursday at 11am in the Hope Gallery Shop.

Yup thats right, with a bad back, and after a hard day's tattooing (if such a thing can be said). I completed my art work for the "Tattoo Hand Book 2" (yes there is a 1, it kicks ass, and I was lucky enough to get into that one as well).

IM very excited because I was under the impression that I was late, and that the dead line was the 1st of May. Well it turns out the deadline is indeed the 31st of May, and I am Early for a change. Very excited on my part. So IM giving all you folks out there in Blog land a peak, or I should say an Unadulterated look at what I've done for said project.
Who knows, maybe I'll use this extra time to start a second piece for this project! But probably noy. Too many other projects to get started on...

Wooo hooo! She's just about here. Believe it or not, Nichole, our very own Baroness, at Hope just got hers in the mail. I hear tell she's Got a friend in High places, and got a wee bit of special treatment. I say this, cause I designed the darn thing, and I haven't gotten mine yet!
But never mind all that. Heres the flier we'll be running over the next couple of days. But we've got big doings for the Hell City Tattoo Festival, Ohio. More on that to come.

Ooooh, My achin back!!!

Oh boo hoo me... No really IM dyin' over here. I threw my back out a week ago today, and its hurtin' like a son ova bitch. And of course IM busier than Hell at work with tattooing, nd side projects. Now granted I've only had to cancel one days worth of appointments, and IM struggling threw the rest. But the side projects are all but at a standstill at the moment, IM just trying to rest up a bit, and get better before I go away next week for the Tried & True show in Orlando.
My belly achin' outta the way, figured I'd post a couple of drawings IM doing for a client this Friday (that is if he digs em). It'll be a complete sleeve, when done, IM keeping the background, and filler stuff till later, when I actually put the stencils on him. So I know how much room I got to fool with.
The fair side to this hurtin back, is that I seem to be able to sit at my desk and work. As long as I don't get up to often, and go on any long walks.
Now time to hang with the ladies.

Bad Back, and crappy days.

I wanted to title this post, Bad Backs, and Rainy day. But as it turns out, it pretty wonderful outside.
But that does not alleviate the pain I've been experiencing in my Back (lower back to be exact). If you know me, you may also know that about once a year, I suffer some pretty crappy back pains. Wether I throw it out moving something, spend all day hunched over a client tattooing, or Hell, just sneezing too hard. It happens, it sucks, and usually IM back in the game in a day or so.
But if you really know me, you may also know that there have really only been 2 other times that I threw my back out so bad that it required me taking several days off, and only 1 other of those instances, did I require, and go to see a doctor. Well this is on of those times. Tomorrow at noon, i've got myself an appointment with a doctor, and what I hope will be some relief.
But enough bout that. Suffice to say, very little has been done in the way of art. Like I said I worked my ass off till I could work it no more. Tattooing everyday, and than doing a bit of painting in the early evening, before leaving Hope for Home.
Which brings me to the art portion of this post. Its a rendering (Sketch, to finish) of my very own KidRobot toy, "The Bride". This lil lady will be made into a small limited edition, signed and numbered print that will accompany any and all of the "Bride" toys purchased from me.
We will also have a limited T-shirt available at the Hell City tattoo convention (while supplies last), of not this image, but one very similar. Very similar, because Its another drawing of the same Toy. suppose theres only so much I can think of doing with the lil lady. But whatever...

Well here's my submission to this years "Flesh to Canvas" art show, being held this May 15th-30th.

It was a long time coming but I've finally gotten er to a point IM happy with it.

You may notice that that is my head on the platter. But the more astute viewer may notice that this was my wife, who was gracious enough to pose for me.

As for my mug here, it was very interesting doing a self portrait. Originally I was gonna go for a bloody, fresh kill. But as I worked the image up, I thought the texture of the fairly recently deceased was more fun.

All in all, done. Now for the framing. Hope she's well received at the show. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the work.

Well, IM back at home (for now), and got blown off yesterday. So I did what any self respecting tattooist should. I spent the day at the studio painting my ass off. As some of ya may know I've only got a couple of weeks to complete this piece that IM hoping to put into the "Flesh to Canvas" show at NYC Last Rites Gallery. I started it what seems months ago, but really, its only been a few weeks (maybe a month). I will admit to having issues with it in the beginning, but I'd like to think IM working thru those.

I've still a bit to go, plus framing. So IM hoping that this weekend will be my time to shine. But with a bunch of tattooing to do, and whatnot, who knows. Fingers crossed...

I will admit its kinda fun doing a dead self portrait of ones self, but weird as well.

Well, still not a whole lotta art happening for me out here in Germany. Today we spent the day hanging out, and seeing the sites. Just a day of rest you might say.
But today is some tattooing. Pretty excited. Bought my self a Swash drive rotary yesterday from Magic Moon out here. Been putting off buying a proper rotary machine for quite sometime. Hope she works as well as everyone says.

Well IM almost ready to head home from my trip to Germany. The show "Tattoo Ink Explosion" was a fantastic time. Needless to say Jime' Litwalk and I were slammed at the booth tattooing, and selling books.

Ha, that title sounded better in my head. Well I just got this painting back from the scanner. (you see she's awful large, and too big to scan at Hope) IM really happy with the way the scans, and print he made up turned out. IM definitely gonna do a print of this one, so keep an eye peeled.
Funny I really couldn't remember if I liked this piece when I first finished it. See Phil took it right to the scanner feller, like the very next day. So I really had not time to brew on her. But as it turns out, IM liking her. Next she's off to the framer.
But first, Heres a shot of her for ya. She's still my back up should my head cheese piece not turn out the way IM hoping. But fingers are crossed on that one. Been a couple of stressful days for me. So not a whole lotta painting going on. But IM hoping to spend a couple of hours in front of the Easel before I head to Germany on Wednesday, wish me luck...

Well another day of tattooing under the ole' belt, and I finished early enough to get a bit of painting in after work (really only a little, Bout an hour & a half).
Got the gal in this piece pretty much finished. Still need to work on the hair, and mellow it out a bit. But IM pretty sure IM done with this part (IM also pretty sure I'll be back into it before to long).
Now IM onto the face. IM hoping to start that today, but that will really depend on how I feel after my long ass tattoo today. But regardless there should be another update soon.

Whelp, got this one on the board a couple of days ago, and had a day to work on it today. Gotta be honest, IM at the point now with this piece that IM really hating this piece. But I will be honest, IM hoping to pull a rabbit outta my ass here, and make something happen here.
I've kinda a rough tattoo tomorrow, so depending how I feel after that. I'll see what I can make happen.

Here's apiece I started a couple of weeks ago. Its from a sketch that I'd done for my "Knock Yerself Out" Sketch book. I started out hating her, and now IM starting to not hate her so much. IM hoping that I can get to a point that I don't mind spending too much time with her. Well one can hope.

She's gonna be my back up painting for the new Last Rites exhibit "Flesh to Canvas 2. Being held this May, at Paul Booths Last Rites. I say my back up, because IM hoping to have another piece done. IM kinda excited bout the idea. But don't even wanna start it till this ones done. Wish me luck.

Couple a thangs

Well, IM trying ta get my ass in gear hear, now that IM back home. That being said, how do I spend my first 2 solid days off? Doing next ta nothing! Yup thats right, Nothing. I'll admit to not being proud of this fact, but other things seemed to have taken precedent over being creative. Worst is I know that there's no excuse for being lazy, and trust me I so wanna get back to my easel, but IM having nothing but problems getting my big ass in the creative, motivated mode. Any ideas, or suggestions would be welcome.
But I did a little sketch for a feller. He's still not seen it, and IM hoping he'll dig her, Time will tell.

Hey all, whelp, IM back from DFW, and just wanna say I had one Hell of a Time. Got to spend some quality time, with good friends.
Also got to do a bit of tattooing. Here's a little sketching I did the day of. Went with the 3/4 angle, sorry no photo of the tattoo to go along with. Crappy picts.
